Re: Chapter 8: Sharing Photos
Hello Adam. I have just discovered a problem since I've upgraded to iLife 5.
I created new albums in iPhoto and can view them withing iPhoto, but when I try to use another application such as Graphic Converter or Epson's Film Factory and cannot see the new albums within my Pictures-iPhoto-Album. All the old ones are viewable but it will not recognize any new folder I create. Any ideas?? Thanks, Ben.

The way iPhoto stores albums changed with iPhoto 5, from a folder and file-based approach with aliases, to an XML file-based approach. Thus, other programs will have to be updated to see iPhoto 5 albums (by reading the XML file rather than just looking at the aliases in album folders).

Re: Chapter 8: Sharing Photos
I have used iPhoto for several years. Now, I am using 5.0.4.
About 6 weeks ago, a problem developed: When I select photos to be emailed and click the email icon in iPhoto choosing Medium (122k) as the compression---the photos are not properly compressed.
For example: a 600k photo instead of ending up close to or right at 122k--will be 300k, somewhere around there. In general the compression is around 50% when I set the compression for Medium.
Usually, when I send photos out, I send eight per email because the email is no larger than 1.0 mb. Immediately, before I noticed what was happening -- family members (with dialup) began to complain at emails that were 2.0 to 3.0.
I have left the problem in the Apple Discussion groups. One person answered. I tried his advice. It did not work. I have searched through Apple's data base, and, of course, the Help files with the program.

Interesting. I'd check a few things. First, make sure the original file size on the photos you're sending now is essentially the same as the ones before. If your camera settings have changed, and the files are larger, iPhoto's shrinkage may be affected.
Second, see what happens if you resend an old photo that you previously sent - in particular, see if the compression is the same or not there.

Re: Chapter 8: Sharing Photos
I did what you said. Both photos the older one (one that I know had been reduced to 122k, the medium setting) and the newer one, were reduced by about 50%. I picked two photos of about the same size --- 650K.
Both were reduced to around 325.
Any other ideas?

All I can think is that something else must have changed - have you updated Mac OS X recently? As long as it's consistent, presumably you can just choose a lower quality to get smaller photos for email again.

Re: Chapter 8: Sharing Photos
I created a slide show in iPhoto 5 with music & Ken Burns. Looks great!
When i burned it to CD & DVD with QuickTime & iDVD the pictures are not sharp & the color is poor. I have an external DVD burner. I need copies for presentations that are good quality, Please help!!
Thanks

P.S. Can i copy a slideshow directly from IPhoto?

Unfortunately, when you go to a QuickTime movie, or to iDVD, you're either compressing the information or displaying it on a low-resolution device (like a TV) or both, so the quality will never be as good. Your best bet, frankly, if possible, is to display directly from within iPhoto on a laptop with a good screen - the 17" PowerBook would be stunning. But if you need to send copies around, your best bet would be a QuickTime movie at a large size.

Re: Chapter 8: Sharing Photos
Hello - I am working at a primitive level, but I was wondering if there is some way you can arrange photos in a folder and have them keep their order. I want to burn the folders to a CD, but the photos take on their own order when placed in a folder. I want to share photos to a DVD player that reads JPEG files. QuickTime only works on another computer.

I think the real question here is what order your DVD player expects the images to be in (likely alphabetical, by filename). Once you've determined that, you can use iPhoto's Batch Change feature to name them such that they sort appropriately, then export using the title as the filename.
